Following a statement after October’s Fed meeting, Fed members made it clear that an interest rate increase would be considered at their “next meeting”, which is scheduled for 15-16th December 2015. The clear message spread optimistic signs across most global markets and increased risk appetite. Most Fed members agreed that US economic conditions are improving, while others agreed that conditions had already been met, in order to trigger a rate increase.

The Federal Reserve held interest rates unchanged at the latest FOMC meeting, with Fed Chair Janet Yellen delivering a “dovish” message. The statement identified that the recent global economic and financial conditions may restrain economic growth and added further downside pressure on US inflation in the short-term. The USD index retreated towards 94.0 against a basket of currencies, remaining under heavy pressure.

It is decision time for the US Federal Reserve. It seems that global markets are going into today’s FOMC’s meeting with a “dovish” mentality. We may be surprised with an interest rate hike despite the recent tepid US economic data. The USD index has been under some pressure ahead of the announcement, retreating towards 95.0 against a basket of currencies in early trade.

The Bank of England announces its latest decision on interest rates, which have been unchanged at 0.5% since March 2009. The Halifax survey showed that house prices increased by 2.7% m/m in August, beating expectations of a more modest increase of 0.5% and showing the biggest monthly increase since May 2014. Sterling slid lower towards 1.5350 against the USD, while the London equity benchmark index retreated nearly 1.0% in early trade this morning, towards 6,170.

ECB President Mario Draghi reassured markets as he announced an increase of emergency liquidity assistance limit by €900m. The euro traded back towards a six week low on Mr Draghi’s comments as contagion fears subsided and investor attention switched back towards the ongoing QE programme. Asian equity markets ended the week on a positive note as major indices across the region posted gains overnight with Chinese mainland stock indices leading the charge higher.

Germany’s retail sales surged 2.9% in January compared to a more modest increase of 0.2% in December, beating analysts’ expectations. The DAX index opened higher following the robust retail data eyeing the 7,000 level.

Chinese benchmark indices rallied to a three year high during overnight trading as risk appetite continued to improve after the PBOC’s surprise decision last week to cut the base rate. Front month Brent futures managed to build on Thursday’s gains, rallying for a second day on Friday as the global crude benchmark closed above $80/bbl for the first time in a week and a half. Spot gold prices edged higher on Friday adding 0.65% on stable investment demand as participants took advantage of the recent rout in prices.

It has been a fairly volatile week for equity and commodity markets. Global equities fluctuated strongly while the USD index continued its strong upside rally above 88.00. However, this morning sentiment improved as we received fairly optimistic news from China.

China’s HSBC Services PMI fell to 50.7 in May compared to 51.4 in April, hitting a 4-month low. The fairly disappointing PMI data contrasted with other recent strong manufacturing PMI economic indicators which showed signs of stabilisation in the Chinese economy.
