The EUR/USD pair is trading in a subdued manner near 1.1224, with the 20 SMA resistance (1.1252) acting as a firm technical resistance, as markets digest a complex macro backdrop dominated by French political instability, divergent central bank expectations, and persistent inflation on both sides of the Atlantic. France remains the single most important headwind for the euro, with protests over fiscal mismanagement pushing French 10-year yields to 5% for the first time since 2002 and the French-German spread widening to approximately 153 basis points — levels approaching the 2011-2012 eurozone debt crisis — with a Moody's credit review due imminently.

On the fundamental front, the ECB faces a difficult policy trade-off as eurozone inflation rose to 3.8% in September while European gas prices have climbed above 80 euros per megawatt-hour, constraining the central bank's ability to tighten aggressively without undermining an already fragile recovery. Meanwhile, the Fed is expected to hold rates steady at its upcoming meeting, but a December hike remains nearly fully priced in, supported by stubbornly elevated U.S. CPI at 3.7% and energy cost pressures from Strait of Hormuz disruptions. The dollar retains structural support from its yield advantage and safe-haven demand, even as U.S. Treasury yields have pulled back modestly from peaks near 5.1%.

From a technical perspective, the daily RSI has recovered to approximately 38 from deeply oversold readings below 26, suggesting bearish momentum may be fading, though the pair remains firmly in weak territory. Looking ahead, the critical technical levels to watch are the 1.1200 support and a 1.1116 low from mid-October on the downside, with the macro combination of French fiscal risk, energy-driven inflation squeezing European confidence, and hawkish Fed pricing favouring continued euro vulnerability against the dollar in the near term.

USD / JPY

USD/JPY is consolidating within a tight range as markets position ahead of next week's pivotal Bank of Japan and Federal Reserve policy decisions. The pair traded between 157.84 and 158.38 over the past 24 hours, closing near 158.26 just above the 20-day SMA at 158.06, with price caught between the 200-day SMA overhead at 158.57 and the 50-day SMA providing support around 157.68. The daily RSI at a neutral 54.6 underscores the wait-and-see posture that has defined the broader consolidation since the September rally from 153.10.

The fundamental backdrop presents competing forces for the pair. On the yen-supportive side, BOJ Deputy Governor Himino's warning that underlying inflation is approaching the 2% target—combined with reports the BOJ will raise its fiscal 2027 inflation forecast—cements expectations for further rate normalization beyond the benchmark's current 31-year high of 1.25%. However, Japan's widening trade deficit, swollen to 536.6 billion yen in September against forecasts of just 181 billion yen as surging oil prices inflate import costs, acts as a structural headwind for yen appreciation. On the dollar side, the 10-year Treasury yield at 5.12% maintains a substantial interest-rate differential underpinning the pair, though an 85% probability of a Fed hold next week limits further upside, leaving USD/JPY technically poised for a breakout, with a sharp, volatile move likely if either technical boundary gives way.

GBP / USD

The GBP/USD pair is benefiting from a powerful combination of UK inflation surprises and broad dollar weakness. UK CPI accelerated to 3.5% year-on-year in September, overshooting expectations, with core inflation at 2.8% and services inflation at 3.7% reinforcing the breadth of price pressures; this, alongside an unexpected drop in unemployment to 4.7%, has led money markets to near-fully price a 25 basis point Bank of England rate hike at the November 5 meeting. Meanwhile, the dollar remains soft, weighed down by fading confidence in the AI investment theme and unwinding of stretched long positioning, with the Federal Reserve widely expected to hold rates at its October 28 meeting.

This monetary policy divergence is clearly reflected in the technical picture, where GBP/USD has rallied sharply from mid-October's 1.3150 low to tag resistance near 1.3403, with the daily RSI surging to around 59 from a prior-month average near 39 and price reclaiming the 1.3350. Concentrated volume during the European/US overlap session confirms genuine buying interest behind the move, though the pair now faces a critical test at the 100-day and 50-day SMA cluster at 1.3389 and 1.3409, respectively, where a decisive break would open the path toward the 200 SMA of 1.3433. The principal near-term risk to this constructive sterling outlook is next week's Autumn Budget, where the Chancellor must balance a deficit exceeding £24 billion in September with fiscal credibility, while the ongoing energy shock continues to feed through into broader UK prices. A combination of stronger technical and mounting macroeconomic pressures suggest that the most recent rally might be losing its steam in the near term.
